Winter's Bone (Dir. Debra Granik) 2010
Winter's Bone is an independent drama directed by Debra Granik starring Jennifer Lawrence. This film was the break though film for Jennifer Lawrence.
Winter's Bone was directed by a female director & the lead role is a female. The film gives an insight & difficulties women have to face in certain societies. Ree Dolly is the eldest child in her family, her mother is ill & her father is gone. She has to look after & teach survival skills to her little brother & sister. On top of that she has to figure out a way to keep the house. The society she is in is ruled by drug addicted older males. She is often asked if she wants to indulge into drugs however Ree refuses to. The strength & the will power is shown well in Jennifer Lawrence's performance. Ree takes on the role as a mother & a father, she teaches her sibling how to shoot, she teaches them to cook. She doesn't want her brother to end up like the other Dolly male family members so she has to be there to raise him & his younger sister up. She wants to go into the army however her responsibility to her brother & sister stop her because she cannot look after them whilst she's away. Throughout the film Ree is punished for trying to rehash the past. I think that they punish her because she is a female & they expect her to stay out of the "men's business" however she is persistent.
Why was this film important for Jennifer Lawrence?
I believe that this film relates to the Hunger Games. We see Ree living in poverty & she is fighting her way through it. Hunger Games is similar but it's on a fantasy level.
