The Babadook (Dir. Jennifer Kent) 2014
The Babadook is a psychological horror film directed by Jennifer Kent. The film was shown in the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, it was then released in Australia on the 22nd May 2014. The film stars Essie Davis (Amelia Vanek), Noah Wiseman (Samuel Vanek), Benjamin Winspear (Oskar Vanek) & Time Purcell (the Babadook). This film was produced by Kristina Ceyton & Kristian Moliere. The Babadook is based on Monsters by Jennifer Kent. Total budget of the film was $2 million & it recieved $7.5 million at the box office.
The home of Amelia & Samuel Vanek is dark throughout the film, this is because the whole atmosphere is depressing, the mother (Amelia) is forever mourning about the loss of her husband & the way she lives shows that. She locks off the basement because that's where she keeps her husbands stuff & even the basement has darkness surrounding it. At the end of the film the whole house brightens up even the basement despite the Babadook living there. The light symbolises everything getting better. Samuel's fears took over the house in the beginning but now that they're gone everything brightened up for them.
Throughout the film Amelia's appearance changes in a negative way. Day by day she looks older & older because of the sleep deprivation, this is shown well throughout the film.
