What Richard Did (Lenny Abrahamson) 2012

What Richard Did is a social realism film directed by Lenny Abrahamson, produced by Ed Guiney & written by Malcom Campbell. This film was screened in the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, then in the BFI Film Festival. It was selected to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in 2013. This film received five awards in the 10th Irish Film & Television Awards. Jack Reynor (Richard Karlsen) received an award for Actor Lead Film. Lenny Abrahamson & Malcolm Campbell won awards for Best Director & Script. Nathan Nugent won for Editing Film.

This film is different from the other social realism film I've watched because it from a different perspective. The film is from an upper class males perspective whereas the other films I have watched are usually from lower class & working class.

The film stars Jack Reynor (Richard Karlsen), Roisin Murphy (Lara), Lars Mikkelsen (Peter Karlsen) Lorraine Pilkington (Katherine Karlsen), Sam Keeley (Conor Harris) & Michelle Doherty (Liv).

The themes that are in this film are jealousy, love, coming of age, & identity.

Richard Karlsen is an 18 year old boy from a rich family. He has everything he wants until he sets his eyes on Lara. Once he's seen Lara, he immediately wants her. Richard obtains Lara however he gets jealous of how close Conor & Lara are. This jealousy becomes out of control when he is at a house party, drunk & ends up killing Conor by accident.

This film hardly has any sound which makes the audience feel how Richard is feeling, especially after he discovers that he killed Conor. With the lack of sound, we as the audience feel the suspense & almost the anxiety that Richard himself is feeling. During the beginning of the film, we see Richard being the social butterfly, he is on top, he has everything at his fingertips until he kills Richard. Through the performance we see a difference before the killing & after. After killing Conor, Richard loses his mind, he breaks down.
