Natural Born Killers (Dir. Oliver Stone) 1994
Natural Born Killers is a black comedy crime thriller directed by Oliver Stone & written by Quentin Tarantino. The themes in this film are love, law, murder, freedom, & abuse. The film stars Woody Harrelson (Mickey Knox), Juliette Lewis (Mallory Knox), Tom Sizemore (Detective Jack Scagnetti) & Robert Downey Junior (Wayne Gale). Natural Born Killers had been nominated the Golden Globe Awards however it did not win. Oliver Stone's other films have received nominations however not a lot.
The budget of this film was $34 million & it received $50.3 million in the box office. Since 2006 this film has been known to be the most controversial.
For this film, the most important micro features were sound & mise-en-scene. The mise-en-scene showed difference in time which helped the audience to understand this. The costume used in flashbacks & the present time were completely different, from hairstyle/makeup to clothes. During the flashbacks, Mallory's hair was shorter & spikey. She was also wearing black clothing which told the audience she was in a punk/gothic phase. The reason why this is important is because her phase could be related to the abuse she gets at home, creating a rebellious teenager. The use of sound, camera movements & location in Mallory's home represents an American sitcom which tells the audience that the abuse was brushed off as if it was normal. Once Mallory met Mickey, he was a way to her freedom, her performance changes, her whole look changes. The first time Mallory meets Mickey, he is wearing white, representing an angel almost, Mallory is released by the angel which is Mickey. For Mickey & Mallory, everything gets better however their actions aren't good but they don't care about it. The abuse they both faced is continuously flashed at the audiences face, resembling post traumatic stress disorder & it triggers Mallory & Mickey. The trigger blocks out their conscience.
