Lilting (Dir. Hong Khaou) 2014
Lilting is British film directed by Hong Khaou. The genre of this film is drama. The themes that are in this film are identity, love, pain, family & mourning. The producer of this film was Dominic Buchanan, it was written by the director himself. The film stars Ben Whishaw, Cheng Pei-pei, Andrew Leung, Morven Christie, Naomi Christie & Peter Bowles. This film was produced by Film London Microwaves & BBC Films.
This film is funded through the Film London Microwave scheme & it used for feature films. Film London also gives mentoring & development support.
During the opening credits, the use of an old chinese song gives the audience an idea that the first character we see is older. This song also gives the impression that this will be a happy film. The place that the mother lives in is a retirement home. The wallpaper in Gin's room looks rather vintage & it is used to make the people living in the retirement home feel young. The performance during the opening sequence is done so well, that the audience don't realise that the mother is actually imagining her son with her until she is interrupted by a worker in the retirement home.
The use of the non diegetic sound in the background connotes the feeling of sadness & pain for the audience. This is done effectively & I believe that the audience do feel this way whilst watching the film.
The use of foreign language emphasises Richard's confusion because Junn cannot speak English & Richard doesn't speak Mandarin. Using Vann as a translator for Junn & Alan would make Richard feel very anxious & relieved at the same. Junn doesn't know that Kai & Richard were together.
Richard feels left out when Kai's mother asks Van to tell Richard to leave. The camera moves into him making him look lonely. The mid shot shows the negative space around Richard. This same feeling is shown on Kai's mother whilst Vann & Alan is talking to Van, they're both speaking in English & Junn doesn't understand.
