Week Ten Film: Norbit (Dir. Brian Robbins) 2007
Norbit is a romantic comedy directed by Brian Robbins, produced by John Davis & Eddie Murphy. The film stars Eddie Murphy (Norbit, Mr. Hangten Wong & Rasputia). Norbit was the first film where Eddie Murphy & Brian Robbins worked together. They then worked together to make Meet Dave & A Thousand Words.
In terms of critical response, on Rotten Tomatoes, Norbit is rated 9% based on 123 reviews. The response on Rotten Tomatoes states that the film Norbit is ore depressing rather than funny because it is filled with stereotypes. Metacritic scored the film 27 out of 100 based on 26 critics. Mick LaSalle suggested that Eddie Murphy's work playing three charters in Norbit was more impressive than ancything he did in Dreamgirls (Dir. Bill Condon) 2006.
The make up & costume was executed very well in this film. Before researching the film, I did not know that Rasputia was played by Eddie Murphy. This impressed me because I have seen films where the make up is really bad that you could easily tell if someone was playing a double role. Again the make up for Mr. Wong was equally as good as Rasputia's because they were able to change Eddie Murphy's race to Asian. His acting also helped made this role convincing.
