Week Eleven Film: Dairy of a Mad Black Woman
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a romantic comedy directed by Darren Grant, produced by Reuben Cannon & written by Tyler Perry. This film has the themes of family, abuse, love, & faith. The film stars Kimberly Elise (Helen McCarter), Steve Harris (Charles McCarter) & Tyler Perry (Madea Simmons, Uncle Joe Simmons & Brian Simmons).
Roger Ebert gave the film 1 out of 4 stars stating that the character Madea was fatal to the movie. On the other hand CinemaScore reported that the audience gave the film an A+ grade.
During the opening weekend, the film was at number 1 with $21.9 million.
In 2008, Donna West filled suit against Tyler Perry because she stated that he (Perry) stole material from her 1991 play Fantasy of a Black Woman. in December 2008 the jury returned an 8-0 verdict in favour of Perry.
Before the film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman was a play.
Similar to the film I watched last week (Norbit), the make up is executed well because Madea is not recognisable as Perry & so is Uncle Joe. The only thing that gives it away is how tall Madea is.
