Anderson stated that The River by Jean Renoir, the films of Satuajit Ray & documentaries on India by Louis Malle were his inspirations for this film. The Darjeeling Limited received 68% of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, on Metacritic the film has an average score of 67 out of 100 & on IMBD the film has a rating of 7.2 out of 10. Roger Ebert gave The Darjeeling Limited 3.5 out of 4. Ebert states that Anderson's script portrays India as just a place instead of tourist area.
