La Haine is a social realism film with the themes of friendship, power, danger, riot & threat. The film is in black & white, the lighting is low key & high contrast which could resemble the darkness that surrounds the young adults. The narrative of this film linear. The narrative shows different events happening separately however it is in order & it ties together to make one story. All three characters in this film are their own narrators, there isn't just one narrator.

I think the most important scene in this film is when Vinz is looking in the mirror & he is roleplaying a scenario in his head & he is saying "are you looking at me your jerk?" This is a key sequence because it shows that Vinz is trying to build this threatening persona. He is mimicking a gun with his hand during this scene & this tells us that he's "practicing" using a gun. The reason why isn't using the real gun is because he shares a home with his grandmother & sister so it would alarm them if they were to walk in the bathroom. It's as if he is living a double life, at home, he is polite & non violent however when he is outside on the streets he wants to come across as this threatening person so nobody walks over him. This scene could also tell us about Vinz's confidence & how it is low. Vinz wants to be the top dog & he doesn't feel like he is especially when he is next to his friend Hubert. There is usually tension between them because Vinz always feels threatened by Hubert however Hubert is not intentionally doing that. the "jerk" that Vinz talks about when he is looking in the mirror is most likely going to be a police officer because he doesn't like them, they shot his friend & he hates them for it, hence why he has stolen one of the officers guns because he wants to use it against them.

  1. Hey Sebastian this needs more analysis, however you have researched the key information needed about the movie such as budget and dates, blah blah blah , Just make it into an objective essay with analysis.
